Moorea — Guide complet
Just 30 minutes from Papeete, Moorea offers a more authentic experience with its spectacular bays and hiking.

I take the ferry from Papeete to Moorea often — maybe too often. In 30 minutes, Tahiti disappears and the two bays open before you. Cook Bay and Opunohu Bay, seen from the overlook, are the kind of landscape that silences even the most talkative people. Two notches cut into the volcanic mountain, filled with water between green and blue, surrounded by dense forest to the ridges.
Moorea is Bora Bora without the hype. The spinner dolphins that appear in front of the ferry at dawn, that's not for tourists — they're there because they live there. The blacktip reef sharks in the lagoon? I've crossed them on foot in 50 cm of water. Snorkeling from the shore is free and exceptional. No need for a €100 tour to see marine life.

Tip : Moorea is easily accessible from Tahiti: 30 minutes by ferry (~€10) or 10 minutes by flight (~€40). Ferry is the local way to travel and much cheaper. Alternatively, you can rent a scooter or quad to explore the island.

Note : These estimates are per person. Couples and families can reduce costs by sharing accommodations and some activities. In low season (May, September, October), expect 20-30% discounts.
The dry season (May-October) offers the best conditions with less rain and pleasant temperatures. July-August are the most touristy months. Avoid November-April (tropical cyclone season).
3-7 days is ideal. Three days are enough to see the island and do main activities (lagoon tour, snorkeling, Mount Otemanu). If you want more relaxation time and deeper exploration, a week is perfect. More than 10 days is really for honeymooning couples maximizing time in overwater bungalows.
Yes, there are sharks in French Polynesia, but incidents are rare (fewer than 5 per year across all of Polynesia). Sharks in the lagoon are usually small reef sharks and harmless. Snorkeling tours are very safe. The island is generally safe for tourists. Petty theft is rare but possible in touristy areas: keep your money and valuables in your hotel room.
Absolutely. Family guesthouses cost €100-150/night. Local meals (food trucks, small restaurants) run €10-15. The lagoon tour is a must-do and costs around €80. You can spend a comfortable week in Bora Bora for €2,500-3,000 including flights from Paris on low-cost airlines or via Bora Bora.
Yes, a valid French or international driver's license is required. Roads are well-maintained and driving is on the left (like in Great Britain). A complete tour of the island by car takes about 45 minutes. Fuel is fairly expensive (around €1.50/liter). Many guesthouses offer free bikes, which can be enough to explore the island at a slower pace.
Photos are beautiful year-round, but best conditions are May-October (dry season, clearer skies). Golden hour (sunset/sunrise) offers incredible tones. If you fly over the island by plane, it's unforgettable — lagoon colors from the sky are postcard-worthy. Lagoon tours also offer excellent photo opportunities.
Moorea is more affordable (30-40% cheaper), greener, and more authentic with the same spectacular lagoon. Bora Bora is more famous, exclusive, and pricey with better nightlife and tourist prestige. Moorea suits families and budget travelers better; Bora Bora appeals to couples seeking luxury. If you have 2 weeks, combine both — 5 days Moorea + 3-4 days Bora Bora offers the best compromise between value, beauty, and experience.
The ferry (30 min, 6-8 departures/day) costs around €25-30 one-way and offers spectacular lagoon views. It's the budget-friendly and pleasant option. The plane (10 min, 2-4 departures/day) costs €100-150 and saves time. The ferry is more authentic and recommended for most visitors; the plane for those with limited time or premium preference. Both dock at Vaiare, where vehicle transfers serve hotels.
Lagoon tours by boat (shark, ray, and coral observation) are essential at €50-70. Trekking to Three Coconuts (Belvedere) offers incredible panoramic views. Swimming with rays and sharks is unforgettable. Natural freshwater pools are accessible via hiking. Opunohu Valley showcases plantations and ancient temples. Free snorkeling directly from beaches is excellent. Sunset views over the lagoon are spectacular. The small villages offer authentic local culture.
Yes, Moorea is very family-friendly with shallow, safe, turquoise lagoons. Children love swimming with rays (tours accept ages 4-5+). Beaches are calm, pensions offer family rates. Activities are easily accessible: moderate trekking, swimming, snorkeling. Small villages maintain a relaxed atmosphere. Less nightlife than Bora Bora, which suits families. Reasonable budget compared to other islands. Food, accommodations, and activities are tailored for family vacations.
2-3 days minimum covers essentials (lagoon tour, Belvedere, swimming with rays). 4-5 days allow proper relaxation and exploration: hikes, natural pools, snorkeling, rest. Combined with Tahiti or Bora Bora, 3-4 days in Moorea creates perfect balance. Many travelers treat it as a day trip from Papeete, which barely scratches the surface. To truly experience Moorea's charm and adventures, 3-4 nights minimum is recommended.
Yes, excellent for scuba diving with varied sites: Tipaniers wall, Haapiti pass, coral garden. May-October offers best conditions and visibility (30m+). PADI clubs are numerous and professional. Dives available for all levels. Free snorkeling is spectacular from beaches. Beginners can do certifications (€130-160). Dive costs: €80-120 per dive. The lagoon is suitable for all experience levels with proper instruction. Seasonal variations affect which marine life you'll encounter.
