In brief

Raiatea is the historic spiritual heart of Polynesia: a quieter, more authentic alternative to Bora Bora, with a rich Polynesian heritage, well-preserved marae (ancient temples) listed as UNESCO World Heritage, and a stunning shared lagoon with neighbouring Taha'a. It is also the main sailing base of French Polynesia.

How to get there

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from authentic family-run guesthouses (pensions de famille) to small local resorts. Expect €70–150 per night for a comfortable stay. Smaller establishments deliver a more genuine Polynesian experience and are usually run by locals who can point you to the best snorkelling spots and viewpoints.

What to do

UNESCO marae

Visit Taputapuātea, the most sacred marae of ancient Polynesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.

Sailing

Charter a yacht — Raiatea is the sailing capital of French Polynesia, with a protected lagoon and easy access to Taha'a, Bora Bora and beyond.

Lagoon & snorkelling

Drift snorkel, motu picnics, and rays / reef sharks in the calm waters between Raiatea and Taha'a.

Frequently asked questions about Raiatea

Why visit Raiatea instead of Bora Bora?
Raiatea offers a more authentic experience: the marae (ancient temples) are better preserved than on other islands, prices are significantly lower, and the island is not overrun by tourism. It is the historic sacred island of Polynesia.
Can I visit the sacred sites alone, or do I need a guide?
The marae are free to access, but a local guide will dramatically enrich your visit — €30–50 for around 2 hours. Without a guide, you'll see ruins; with one, you'll understand the ancient Polynesian belief system.
Is it a good island for sailing?
Excellent. Raiatea has several marinas, solid sailing infrastructure and a sheltered lagoon. It is the main sailing base in Polynesia, with easy access to Taha'a, Bora Bora and the Tuamotu atolls.
How do I get to Raiatea from Papeete?
Direct Air Tahiti flight: about 45 minutes. Fare: €100–140 one way. There is also a cargo-passenger ferry from Papeete (€45, 8–10 hours) — slower but more authentic.
When is the best time to visit Raiatea?
The dry season (May to October) is ideal. July and August are perfect but slightly hotter. For sailors, May–June and September–October offer the best wind conditions and fewer tourists.
