Choose an address, not an island reputation
No island is automatically “best” for a remote worker. The correct choice depends on lawful status, working hours, the exact internet connection, housing, healthcare, transport and what happens when the primary connection fails.
Before comparing islands
Separate travel permission from work rules
Entry or stay permission does not by itself answer whether a person may work, provide services locally, register a business or owe tax. Nationality, employer location, clients, length of stay and household circumstances can change the answer. Check the competent authorities before signing a lease or promising availability to a client.
No universal “digital nomad visa” claim
This guide does not label a tourist stay as a work permit. Obtain advice for the real situation from the High Commission, tax administration or other competent service.
Island profiles
Use these as questions, not rankings
Moorea
Close to Tahiti by ferry, but a daily crossing is still vulnerable to schedules and conditions. Check how the base reaches Vaiare and whether the workday fits the ferry.
Raiatea
A practical Leeward Islands base with airport and services around Uturoa. Test the connection and commute at the exact address; outer districts are not interchangeable.
Huahine and smaller islands
A slower setting may suit focused work, while fewer backup services and connections increase the need for autonomy. Verify electricity, internet, supplies and evacuation arrangements.
Bora Bora
Strong tourism economy but housing and daily transport can be difficult. A resort motu is not a neutral work base if every trip depends on a shuttle.
Tuamotu
Atoll life can provide quiet and exceptional surroundings. Lagoon transfers, limited services and address-level connectivity make a tested fallback essential.
Technical test
Ask for evidence, then run your own trial
- Connection technology and subscribed plan at the exact address.
- Measured upload, download, latency and stability during your working hours.
- Mobile coverage inside the room, not only outside the property.
- Power-cut history and backup available to the household.
- Secure place for calls, heat management and equipment storage.
- Offline work and client communication plan when both primary and mobile links fail.
A speed-test screenshot from another building or an island-wide coverage map does not prove performance in the proposed room.
Time zone and travel
Model a real working week
Convert recurring meetings to Tahiti time and include seasonal clock changes in other countries. If the workday runs very early or late, check noise, lighting, food access and safe transport. Add the cost of returns to Tahiti, equipment replacement and accommodation during a disrupted connection.

Rent temporarily in the intended district and work normal hours.

Check internet, power, healthcare, transport and supplies.
