The best of three archipelagos in 14 days

With two weeks, you have ideal time to experience multiple faces of Polynesia: Tahiti's local and cultural life, Moorea's wild nature and snorkeling, Bora Bora's iconic lagoon, and the atoll world of the Tuamotu. This is the circuit I recommend to 95% of first-time visitors.

Logistics flow well: the first two stops (Tahiti–Moorea) go by ferry or plane, then you fly to Bora Bora, and finally to Rangiroa from Bora Bora or via Papeete. No unnecessary backtracking.

Day by day — 14 days in Polynesia

Tahiti — 2 nights

Days 1 to 3
Day 1 Arrival in Tahiti — Jet lag & acclimatation

The Paris–Tahiti flight takes about 21 to 22 hours with a stopover (often Los Angeles or San Francisco). You typically land early morning at Tahiti-Faaa airport. First contact with warm Pacific air, tiaré flowers, and Polynesian smiles.

Check into your hotel, rest up. In the afternoon, explore Papeete market 3–4 km from the airport: local crafts, exotic fruits, shell necklaces. In the evening, dine at the roulotte (food truck) on the waterfront — best value for money in all of Polynesia.

Practical tip Don't plan anything intense on day one. The jet lag (−11h from Paris) is rough — you'll sleep poorly the first night. Allow yourself at least 2h of nap time before going out.
Day 2 Around Tahiti & Teahupo'o

Rent a car and circle the island in one day (about 115 km). On the agenda: Faarumai waterfalls, Pointe Vénus (historic site where Cook observed Venus in 1769), black sand beaches, marae (Polynesian temples). In the afternoon, head to Teahupo'o on Tahiti Iti — the mythical surf wave, spectacular even without a contest.

Don't miss The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands in Punaauia — 2h visit to understand Polynesian history and culture. Essential for appreciating the rest of the trip.
Tahiti → Moorea Aremiti or Terevau ferry from Papeete: 30 min, ~€10. Or Air Tahiti flight: 10 min, ~€40 (but time lost at airport). Ferry is recommended.

Moorea — 4 nights

Days 3 to 7
Day 3 Arrive Moorea — Bays & first snorkeling

Moorea impresses immediately. The view from the belvedere over Cook Bay and Opunohu Bay is one of the most beautiful in Polynesia — perhaps the world. Take time to rent a bicycle or scooter to explore at your pace. In the afternoon, snorkel in Cook Bay for your first Polynesian snorkeling: leopard rays, turtles, parrotfish.

Day 4 Lagoon tour & swimming with dolphins

The lagoon boat day is unmissable in Moorea. On the agenda: swimming with blacktip reef sharks (harmless), swimming with spinner dolphins (wild, not captive), visiting motu (islets), snorkeling in the crystal lagoon. Budget €80 to €120 per person for an organized excursion. Splendid.

Book in advance Lagoon excursions leave early (7:30–8am). Book the night before through your hotel or directly with local operators like Dr. Moran Diving or Moorea Blue Diving.
Days 5–6 Hiking & Moorea's secret beaches

Moorea's mountains are extraordinary — accessible without being exhausting. The hike to the Belvedere (1.5h round trip from the 3 coconut col) offers a breathtaking panorama over both bays. For the more adventurous, the climb to Mont Rotui (3h round trip) is unforgettable. Save the last day for Temae beach on the east side — shallow turquoise water, ideal for families.

Moorea → Bora Bora — Air Tahiti flight Via Moorea airport or via Papeete (stopover). Duration: 45 min to 1h30 depending on connection. Price: €120–200 one way. Book at the same time as your Paris-Tahiti flight.

Bora Bora — 5 nights

Days 7 to 12
Day 7 Arrive Bora Bora — First contact with the lagoon

Landing in Bora Bora is one of the world's most beautiful approaches: from the plane, the turquoise lagoon ringed by motu and dominated by Mount Otemanu is breathtaking. The airport is on a motu — a boat shuttle brings you to the main island. Settle in and start exploring on foot or by bicycle around the lagoon.

Days 8–9 Lagoon excursions — Rays, sharks, motu

Boat excursions in Bora Bora's lagoon are exceptional. Snorkeling with stingrays (swimming in their natural habitat) and blacktip reef sharks is a unique experience. Don't miss Motu Tapu, a paradisiacal islet with white sand beach and coconut palms. Many luxury hotels organize their own excursions.

Overwater bungalow If your budget allows, one night in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora is an experience in itself. Waking up with the view of the turquoise lagoon from your bed is worth the extra cost.
Days 10–11 Water sports & Otemanu hike

Bora Bora offers a range of water sports: jet ski, kitesurfing, stand-up paddle, scuba diving (the passes are spectacular with manta rays). On land, the hike around Mount Otemanu (about 2h) offers unmatched panoramas over the lagoon and motu. Circling the island by scooter (€40/day) in 2 hours is also great.

Bora Bora → Rangiroa (or Tikehau) — Air Tahiti flight Via Papeete (1–2h stopover usually). Total duration: 2–3h. Price: €150–250 one way depending on season. This leg is optional but highly recommended for divers and wild nature lovers.

Rangiroa (Tuamotu) — 2 nights

Days 12 to 14
Days 12–13 Diving & Rangiroa lagoon — The giant atoll

Rangiroa is one of the world's largest atolls. Its lagoon is so large you can't see its edges. The Avatoru and Tiputa passes are among the Pacific's best dive sites: spinner dolphins, reef sharks, rays, tuna, barracuda. Even without diving, the boat crossing of the lagoon to the Blue Lagoon is unforgettable.

Day 14 Return Rangiroa → Papeete → Paris

Last morning in Rangiroa — enjoy the natural pool or a final snorkel from the beach. The return flight to Papeete usually departs in the morning (9am–11am). In Papeete, connect to the Paris flight (departure often in evening or midnight). Arrive in Paris the following morning.

Return tip Use your Papeete stopover to stock up on local products at the market: Tahitian vanilla, monoi oil, mother-of-pearl, tifaifai (embroidered quilts). This is your last chance.

Variations by travel profile

The base circuit can be adapted according to your preferences, budget, and available time.

For divers

Replace Tahiti with Tikehau (3 nights) and Rangiroa with Fakarava (3 nights, UNESCO reserve). The Tuamotu passes are among the world's best dive sites.

Sites: Fakarava, Rangiroa, Tikehau

For families

Stick to Tahiti + Moorea (7 days) + Bora Bora (7 days). Avoid extra flights and nights in remote atolls with young children. Moorea is ideal for kids (shallow lagoons, dolphins, rays).

Less transit, more lagoon

For couples

Moorea (3 nights) + Bora Bora (7 nights, overwater bungalow). Sacrifice diversity for intensity. Bora Bora is THE honeymoon destination — 7 nights let you truly unwind in this dream setting.

Honeymoon ideal

Limited budget

Tahiti (3 nights) + Moorea (5 nights) only — the ferry is cheap, guesthouses are affordable, and Moorea's lagoon rivals Bora Bora's at a fraction of the price. Realistic budget: €2,500–3,500/person.

From €2,500/person

When and how to book?

Polynesia requires more advance planning than most destinations. Here's a recommended booking timeline for traveling in July-August (high season).

6–9 months before Book your Paris–Tahiti flight. Prices rise quickly. Air Tahiti Nui, Air France, Corsair depending on deals.
4–6 months before Book Air Tahiti inter-island flights. Especially in July-August when seats are limited. Their website or Polynesia Air Pass.
3–5 months before Book accommodation in Bora Bora and Moorea. Bora Bora's luxury hotels sell out months in advance.
2–3 months before Book accommodation in Tahiti and Rangiroa. Prepare travel insurance. Check your snorkeling gear.
On arrival Book lagoon excursions on-site or the day before — more flexibility depending on weather. Only very popular excursions require advance booking.

What we're asked most often

Yes, but you'll need to make choices. With 10 days, I recommend Tahiti (1 night) + Moorea (3 nights) + Bora Bora (5 nights). Skip the Tuamotu — you won't have time to appreciate them. 10 days is the strict minimum to avoid spending half your trip on planes.

Both work. A Polynesia specialist agency can save you time and sometimes get better rates on luxury properties. Independently, Booking.com, TravelPayout, and Air Tahiti's website are more than sufficient. Advantage of going independent: flexibility to change hotels or add an island if you fall in love with a place.

Three main options: Air Tahiti Nui (direct or via Los Angeles, the only Polynesian airline), Air France (via Los Angeles), and Corsair (sometimes good deals via San Francisco or Houston). Flight duration: 17h direct or 21–23h with stopover. Air Tahiti Nui's direct flight from Paris CDG is generally the best choice for comfort.

Air Tahiti's Polynesia Air Pass offers unlimited inter-island flights for a set duration (5, 7, 10, 15 days). It's worthwhile if visiting 4+ islands. For only 2–3 islands, individual tickets are often cheaper. Always compare both options before deciding.
