Moorea as a couple, or with children?
Moorea works either way — it has the highest occupancy rate in French Polynesia (84.4 % in Q3 2025). But "couple" or "family" is not enough to decide. What shapes the stay is the children's ages, how confidently they swim, whether you have a car, and how far the hospital is.

The ferry changed in 2026
Terevau has ceased operations. The Papeete–Vaiare line is shared between Aremiti, Tauati Ferry and Vaeara'i, on a crossing the local press describes as saturated at peak hours. Book a vehicle ahead, and never plan a same-day flight connection without two hours of margin.

The four-night programme
The island owes its shape to two great bays, Cook's and Opunohu, divided by Mount Rotui. The Opunohu Belvedere, 240 m up inside the crater, looks over both — go early, before the cloud rises with you.
Two waymarked trails start there and need no guide: the Three Coconut Trees pass (3 hours return, 7 km, 200 m of ascent) and the Three Pines pass (1 h 30, 3.5 km), which passes a marae and a notable banyan. The Opunohu valley holds ancient marae and pineapple fields.
In the lagoon, the reef is pierced by twelve passes. One morning boat trip — the wind usually gets up in the afternoon — plus shore snorkelling at Temae or Ta'ahiamanu is plenty.

What to check before booking
Water access
Not every beach is a children's beach. Check the depth, the coral on the bottom, and the current near the passes — there are twelve of them.
The quay transfer
Vaiare is not where you stay. Arrange the transfer before you sail, with child seats if you need them — they are not standard.
Meals
Many guesthouses serve dinner at a fixed hour. Ask explicitly: it is the constraint that most often catches families with young children off guard.
Healthcare
24/7 emergencies at Afareaitu, 13 beds, maternal and child health. Everything else is on Tahiti. Check that your insurance covers inter-island evacuation.

The point that decides it for a family
Moorea has two collèges — Paopao and Afareaitu — and no lycée. From the age of about fifteen, a teenager either commutes daily or moves to Tahiti. That is the first thing to look at, before the lagoon, and the thing that makes families move a second time when they did not anticipate it.

How many nights on Moorea?
Four is the right number: one lagoon day, one land day (Belvedere and the Opunohu valley), one unpaid buffer day that absorbs a cancelled boat trip or a slow morning, plus the half-days of arrival and departure. Two nights is a visit; six is a holiday.
Is Moorea suitable for young children?
Yes, provided you cut transfers rather than days and check three things: the actual depth and bottom of the beach in front of your accommodation, the transfer from Vaiare quay with child seats, and the fixed dinner hour that many guesthouses keep.
Do I need a car?
Yes, or at least a scooter. There is no useful public transport on the island, the circuit is about sixty kilometres, and the Vaiare quay is not where you sleep. One day's rental covers the whole island.
How much is the ferry?
Two thousand three hundred and fifty XPF one way for a visiting adult and 4 700 XPF return with Aremiti as of 19 August 2026; residents pay 1 650 XPF. A vehicle under 4.10 m starts at 5 440 XPF one way. Allow 30 minutes on the fast catamaran.
