INFRASTRUCTURE

Internet Connection and Coworking

French Polynesia has invested heavily in its digital infrastructure. The Honotua submarine cable has linked Tahiti to the United States since 2010. Connectivity is good on Tahiti and variable across the outer archipelagos.

💡 Local tip

Starlink is now available in French Polynesia. If you're staying on a remote island or an isolated fare, a portable Starlink antenna (around 35,000 XPF to purchase + monthly subscription) guarantees 50–150 Mbps anywhere. Ideal for video calls from a motu.

WHERE TO BASE YOURSELF

Best Islands for Digital Nomads

Not all islands are equal for remote work. Here is our ranking based on connectivity, cost of living and day-to-day quality of life.

⭐ Recommended

Tahiti — Papeete and surroundings

ConnectionFibre + top 4G+
Coworking3 dedicated spaces
BudgetHigh

The logical base for a working stay. All amenities: banks, hospitals, supermarkets, international airport, active professional network. Papeete lacks charm but provides everything a nomad needs. The east coast (Taravao) is quieter and more affordable.

⭐ Recommended

Moorea — the best compromise

ConnectionReliable 4G+
Ferry Tahiti30 min
BudgetModerate

Moorea is the ideal island for nomads who want a dream setting without sacrificing connectivity. More affordable villas and apartments than Tahiti, crystal-clear sea, mountain backdrop. 30 minutes by ferry from Papeete for in-person meetings or emergencies.

🔶 Possible

Bora Bora — luxury, not an office

ConnectionDecent 4G
AccommodationVery expensive
BudgetVery high

Bora Bora is Instagram-worthy but not optimal for remote work: overpriced accommodation, limited services, only one pharmacy. Perfect for a week of "bleisure" travel — less suitable for a 2-month nomad stay.

🔶 For adventurers

Huahine — quiet and off the beaten track

ConnectionVariable 4G
CoworkingNone
BudgetModerate

For nomads seeking isolation and happy with variable connectivity (10–25 Mbps). Attractive rents, underdeveloped tourism, authentic Polynesian life preserved. Requires an internet backup (Vini SIM + Starlink recommended).

💡 Recommended strategy

Base yourself in Moorea long-term (better value for money) and come to Tahiti 1–2 times per week for the coworking space and meetings. The Moorea-Papeete ferry costs 1,200 XPF one way and runs every hour.

LEGAL & ADMINISTRATIVE

Visa and Legal Status

French Polynesia is a territory of the French Republic. Entry and residency rules differ depending on your nationality and the length of your stay.

🇫🇷 French Citizens

  • Unlimited stay, no visa needed
  • Consular registration not required
  • Access to local public services
  • Self-employment possible on arrival
  • French carte vitale not valid (local CPS)

🇪🇺 EU / EEA Nationals

  • Free entry, 3-month stay without visa
  • Beyond 3 months: residence permit needed
  • Renewal possible by leaving/re-entering
  • Working locally requires authorisation
  • Remote work for foreign employer: ok up to 3 months

🌍 Non-EU (UK, USA, Canada, etc.)

  • Tourist entry: 1–3 months depending on nationality
  • No official digital nomad visa
  • Renewal by leaving the territory
  • Local professional activity requires permit
  • Remote work for foreign employer: tolerated

💼 Freelancers and Entrepreneurs

  • Self-employment: register at CCI Papeete
  • Social contributions managed by CPS
  • Maintaining French micro-enterprise possible
  • Double taxation: check FR/PF tax treaties
  • Tax residency changes after 183 days/year

⚠️ Tax residency warning

If you spend more than 183 days per year in French Polynesia, you may become a Polynesian tax resident. PF has its own tax system (different income tax rates). Consult a local accountant or the Papeete tax office before settling long-term.

BUDGET

Realistic Monthly Budget

French Polynesia is an expensive destination. Consumer prices are 40–60% higher than in mainland France due to remoteness and local taxation. Here are realistic budgets for different lifestyles.

Note: These estimates exclude international flights (€1,500–3,000 Paris–Papeete depending on season). The fixed exchange rate is 1 € = 119.33 XPF.

FINANCES

Banking and Money on a Daily Basis

French Polynesia uses the Pacific Franc (XPF), pegged to the euro at a fixed rate (119.33 XPF = €1). Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, supermarkets and restaurants on Tahiti. American Express is rare.

The main local banks are Banque de Polynésie (Société Générale subsidiary) and Banque de Tahiti (BNP subsidiary). Opening a local account is complex without a residence permit and local employment. For stays under 6 months, use a low-fee foreign card.

💳 Recommended cards for nomads

Revolut, Wise or N26 Metal — zero currency conversion fees on XPF, free ATM withdrawals up to a certain limit. Always carry cash when arriving in Papeete: small businesses, markets and local transport (le truck) operate on cash. ATMs at Banque de Polynésie and Banque de Tahiti accept foreign Visa/MC cards.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the internet connection reliable enough for remote work in French Polynesia?
In Papeete and along the Tahiti coast, fibre and 4G+ (50–100 Mbps) allow comfortable remote work including video calls, VPN use and heavy file transfers. Moorea also offers good 4G+. Remote islands require a backup (Starlink). Avoid relying solely on your Airbnb's WiFi — it is often insufficient for serious work.
What visa do I need to work remotely from French Polynesia?
French citizens need no visa. EU nationals stay freely for 3 months. Outside the EU, the standard 90-day tourist entry covers a short nomad stay. There is no dedicated digital nomad visa. If you work remotely for a foreign employer without exercising any activity locally, tourist status is generally tolerated — though legally ambiguous for non-EU citizens beyond 90 days.
Are there coworking spaces in Tahiti?
Yes, Papeete has several options: Fare Ute Hub (the largest, gigabit fibre, active community), Le Loft Tahiti (a central café-coworking space) and office spaces in the business districts. Expect to pay 3,000–8,000 XPF per day (€25–65) or a monthly membership around 40,000 XPF. Outside Tahiti, there are no formally structured coworking spaces yet.
What is the monthly budget for a digital nomad in French Polynesia?
A comfortable budget sits around 300,000–350,000 XPF/month (€2,500–3,000): furnished accommodation 120,000–150,000 XPF, food 70,000–90,000 XPF, coworking 30,000 XPF, transport 15,000–20,000 XPF, leisure 40,000 XPF. The minimal tight budget is around 180,000 XPF (€1,500) living simply outside Papeete.
Which SIM card should I get in French Polynesia?
Vini (Orange group) is the leader with the best coverage across all islands, including remote archipelagos. Vodafone PF is competitive on Tahiti and Moorea. Both operators have counters at Faaa Airport. Start with a prepaid 30 GB data SIM (3,000–5,000 XPF). For longer stays, a monthly unlimited data plan costs around 4,500–7,000 XPF.
Is Moorea or Bora Bora better for working remotely?
Moorea wins easily for remote work: reliable 4G+ island-wide, much more affordable accommodation (half the price of Bora Bora), and 30 minutes by ferry from Papeete. Bora Bora is spectacular but expensive, and its connectivity can be patchy. For a nomad stay of more than a week, Moorea offers a far better balance between productivity and quality of life.
