Tahiti or Bora Bora?
It is not a contest. Tahiti is a 1 042 km² island with valleys, a city and 212 000 residents; Bora Bora is 38 km² and lives on high-end tourism. The question that actually decides it is price: a Bora Bora room costs 2.7 times a Windward Islands room. Here are the official figures.

The gap is measured, not imagined
ISPF publishes the average room rate by destination every quarter. In Q2 2025: 125 815 XPF at Bora Bora against 47 223 XPF in the Windward Islands (Tahiti and Moorea) — a ratio of 2.7. In Q3, Bora Bora rose to about 137 000 XPF while Moorea sat at 60 266 XPF.
The same table read differently: Bora Bora accounts for 30.5 % of all rooms sold in French Polynesia, at 73.9 % occupancy, down 7.1 points; the Windward Islands take 57.0 % at 79.1 % occupancy, up 7.1 points. The market is already moving.
The flight is not what makes the difference
A Papeete–Bora Bora return starts at 40 246 XPF, against 31 881 XPF for Raiatea and 33 227 XPF for Huahine. The gap between islands is decided by accommodation, not by the ticket.
Access
An island whose airport is not on the island
Papeete–Bora Bora takes 50 minutes over 259 km. But the airport sits on motu Mute, separate from the main island: you then take a 15-minute boat shuttle to Vaitape village. The shuttle is included in the air ticket, and it leaves Vaitape 90 minutes before flights — build that into your last day, it is the single most common source of panic on this trip.
Tahiti connects to Los Angeles, Paris, Auckland, San Francisco, Honolulu and Tokyo. The airport handled 792 158 scheduled passengers in the first half of 2026, split almost evenly between domestic and international.

Do I have to choose between Tahiti and Bora Bora?
No. You will pass through Tahiti either way — it is the only airport with regular international flights. The real question is how you split the nights. Over two weeks, two or three nights on Tahiti at each end plus four on a Leeward island is the pattern that works.
Is Bora Bora really that much more expensive?
Yes, and it is measured. In Q2 2025 the average room rate was 125 815 XPF at Bora Bora against 47 223 XPF in the Windward Islands — 2.7 times more. The air fare, by contrast, differs by only a few thousand francs between the Leeward islands.
How long does it take to reach Bora Bora from the airport?
Fifty minutes' flying from Papeete, then a fifteen-minute boat shuttle from motu Mute to Vaitape. The shuttle is included in the air ticket and leaves Vaitape ninety minutes before departures on the way back.
What is there to do on Tahiti if I dislike cities?
The east coast: the Arahoho blowhole, the Faarumai waterfalls, Pointe Vénus, the Vaipahi water gardens, and Teahupo'o at the end of the Tahiti Iti road. Tahiti has the highest peak in French Polynesia, both black and white sand, and essentially the only structured hiking network in the country.
